What I Do
Diets don't work. Pleasure does!
We all love pleasure. We all look for pleasure in how we feel, how we look, in our social life. And we demand pleasure from our food. So what do we do? DIET!
We rigorously follow a restrictive food and exercise regime. But we can’t stick to it - why? It’s not because we are weak or lack willpower. It is because we have busy lives with multiple demands made upon us and following a restrictive schedule is just one more tough demand.
You set out on a diet with the best of intentions. However, even the best laid plans will ultimately be hijacked by the realities of our day to day lives. How can you count calories when you are busy with business lunches and evening networking events? How can you avoid carbs if you are invited to a dinner party and your hosts insist you try all their food? How many more times can you play with your main course at a restaurant, pretending you are full, when you know you are not? Is it possible to hit the 7am spin class when you only returned home at 10pm? Can you stay sane if you always feel you have to refuse the foods you love?
You can’t and it’s hell trying! You might manage it for a week, some of you for a month, the most determined for 6 months. But at some point, you won't be able to keep to these diets. And when you fall, you fall hard. You blame yourself. You feel like a failure - It’s miserable.
As a qualified GP with a passion for food and nutrition, I want to change this. I will work with you to structure a personally tailored approach to food and activity, with a focus on the things that give you pleasure. One to one consultations will allow us to address, in detail, your relationship with food and exercise in the context of your medical health and wellbeing. Together we will tease out why you eat what you do and what areas of eating are most problematic for you. Then, with awareness and understanding on our side, we will attempt to alter how you engage with food and encourage you to move your body in a way that you enjoy.
There is no diet regime to follow and hence nothing to 'fall off' or fail at. Instead you will be provided with general principles that you can use to guide your food and activity choices every day. Because if you can eat food that you love, whilst loving life, we have a great recipe for sustained permanent weight loss AND pleasure.
